The San Diego County Toyota Dealers Association (SDTDA) is kicking off the 2022 summer by celebrating the 10th anniversary of its partnership with the City of San Diego Lifeguards. The milestone anniversary recognizes Toyota as a proud community partner and their ongoing commitment to keeping communities safe, on and off the road. The SDTDA has been an integral partner of the San Diego Lifeguards since 2011, donating fleets of vehicles to the city for lifeguard rescue and operations and sponsoring the Lifeguards’ Water Safety Days program that provides education on safe practices in the water and on the beach. “Over the years, we’ve committed to equipping the City of San Diego Lifeguards with the proper vehicles to keep people safe at one of the country’s most popular beach destinations,” said Ivan Mendelson, president of the SDTDA. “It’s been a pleasure working with the City of San Diego to help promote beach safety and we look forward to continued success and growth in the years ahead.” more The multi-year partnership agreement includes complimentary vehicle maintenance and service, including monthly detailing during peak summer months for each of the 35 vehicles in the current fleet. Through the TDA, the city has saved more than $3.5 million in costs by not having to purchase, maintain or service the lifeguards’ vehicle fleet over the past 10 years. “Toyota’s partnership has given us an exceptional advantage,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department chief Colin Stowell. “It’s a unique and beneficial relationship that allows our lifeguards to use high-performance vehicles tailored to the work they do protecting beachgoers. The City appreciates Toyota’s support and looks forward to continuing this great collaboration.” Toyota’s vehicles are off-road capable and extremely durable, built to withstand rough sand and marine environments. This year’s lineup features a variety of SUVs and pick-up trucks, including Tacoma, 4Runner and Sequoia, helping lifeguards navigate effectively and safely through soft sand and rocky beach terrains. “Our lifeguards have benefited tremendously from the vehicles Toyota has delivered over the past ten years,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue Dept. lifeguard chief James Gartland. “Toyota not only provides us with great trucks, but also features our lifeguards in local TV and radio ads, spreading the word about the critical work our team does every day.” The City’s lifeguard, fire and police departments, along with members of the SDTDA, commemorated the 10-year partnership milestone on Friday, May 27 at Ski Beach, shortly followed by the season’s first “Toyota Water Safety Day” on June 4. The all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia takes the best pieces of the full-size SUV’s long-established reputation and adds features that elevate performance, comfort and safety. Now assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX), this completely redesigned SUV can tow like a truck, entertain the whole family and venture off-road without skipping a beat. Here are five noteworthy traits of Toyota’s all-new 2023 Sequoia: Hybrid Efficiency Meets Powerful Performance The 2023 Sequoia is available exclusively as a hybrid. It’s not what most drivers picture when they think of an electrified vehicle, but the twin turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX powertrain is ready to shatter expectations of what a full-size hybrid SUV can do. more The powertrain, sporting 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, marries the twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor generator that resides in a housing between the engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission — optimizing the power output of the vehicle. Expected to be highly competitive in fuel economy, the 2023 Sequoia also takes advantage of its electric motor for impressive acceleration and instantaneous responsiveness, on top of efficiency. Drivers will find the Sequoia in 2WD or the available part-time 4WD system on SR5, Limited, Platinum and Capstone grades. The TRD Pro model will be offered only in 4WD. Towing in an SUV has Never Been Easier For those who feel intimidated towing a trailer in anything other than a truck, the 2023 Sequoia is here to dispel that fear. In addition to an increase in towing capacity of up to 22% over the outgoing model (up to 9,000 pounds), the SUV has a TOW/HAUL mode that engages the electric and gas motors in tandem for the ideal combination of acceleration and torque. For visibility, the standard Panoramic View Monitor displays a top-down view of the vehicle and area around it so that drivers can have full confidence in maneuvering their surroundings, while the hitch view assists with trailer connection. And the Tow Tech Package, standard on the Platinum, TRD Pro and Capstone grades, offers Trailer Backup Guide and Straight Path Assist, which helps ensure the vehicle moves in a straight line once the desired path is set by the driver. With the addition of optional power folding, extending and retracting tow mirrors, drivers will never have to question the decision to hitch their haul again. A Family-Size Interior With Features for Everyone A true family vehicle begins with seating for all. Toyota’s impressive, electrified lineup showed up big at the 2022 Electrify Expo in Long Beach, California. As a leader in electrified mobility, Toyota’s display features the all-new battery-electric 2023 bZ4X and the Tundra i-FORCE MAX hybrid, along with other Toyota plug-in hybrids and fuel cell electric models to explore. Toyota plans to expand to around 70 electrified models globally by 2025 and this diverse portfolio of electrified products will help propel Toyota toward its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The expo kicked off its 2022 tour at the Long Beach Convention Center, June 3-5. Going Beyond Zero Toyota’s all-new, battery-electric bZ4X is the first of seven electric vehicles that will be introduced globally under the “Toyota bZ” brand moniker, with “bZ” standing for “Beyond Zero”. The sleek SUV comes in two grades in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) with XLE FWD, obtaining an EPA-estimated range rating of up to 252 miles per charge. The design theme of “hi-tech and emotional” shows through the bold exterior and wide, spacious interior with premium finishes. It comes loaded with intuitive tech features through a standard 12.3-inch widescreen Toyota Audio Multimedia system that offers interaction through touch and voice activation controls. The bZ4X also demonstrates first-in-class drivability with smooth acceleration, instant torque delivery and off-pavement capability on AWD models with X-mode®. The bZ4X is arriving in dealers now and starts at $42,000 for the XLE FWD model. more Bringing impressive balance of efficiency and power Along with the bZ4X, Toyota brought several other beloved electrified vehicles to experience at the festival’s Ride and Drive event, including the Tundra i-FORCE MAX hybrid, Prius Prime, RAV4 Prime, and Mirai. Tundra i-FORCE MAX boasts an all-new hybrid twin-turbo V6 on the third-generation Tundra that was redesigned from the ground up. This powerful powertrain produces 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft of torque without compromising efficiency, with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 22 MPG combined on certain models. And it comes standard on the premium Capstone and highly capable TRD Pro Grade, which is available to drive. The i-FORCE MAX is a cleverly engineered powertrain featuring a unique motor generator within the bell housing between the twin-turbo engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. This design combines maximum performance with amazing efficiency, and it is built with heavy-duty performance in mind. Sequoia’s fuel economy is expected to be extremely competitive at the top of the segment – and a huge improvement over the previous generation. Setting Sights on the Open Road The full-size SUV segment demands a lot, which means the all-new 2023 Sequoia needs to handle – and succeed – at a multitude of tasks. Built with this in mind, the Sequoia is rooted in a modern body-on-frame chassis with a fully boxed frame that shares architecture with the all-new Tundra and all-new global Land Cruiser (which shares its platform with the Lexus LX). The core objective of this platform is to provide excellent handling, supreme comfort and impressive capability. The engineering team behind this next-generation frame was able to increase rigidity and improve ride comfort by using new techniques, such as new laser welding technology that helps reduce mass and weight in areas it’s not needed while reinforcing the areas that need them most. Sequoia features an independent front suspension and adopts a new rack-mounted electronic power steering system for improved steering feel. A modern multi-link rear suspension is employed out back to offer a smooth ride and create opportunity to add the available Load-Leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) for those looking to tow regularly. The three-row SUV offers a range of configurations for seating and cargo. Depending upon the grade, second-row passengers get bench seating or captain’s chairs, either of which recline for passenger comfort or fold down/tumble forward if larger cargo space is needed. That’s why the all-new Sequoia offers up to an impressive 9,520-pound maximum towing capacity, a 26 percent increase over the previous generation model. Towing can be an intimidating proposition for some drivers. Not to worry, thanks to impressive technology available on Sequoia. The Tow Tech Package, standard on TRD Pro and Capstone and available on all other grades, offers a suite of features that include Trailer Backup Guide to aid in backing up the SUV with a trailer, and Straight Path Assist, which helps provide steering control to keep the trailer straight on its intended path when backing up. Drive Mode Select is an all-new feature on Sequoia offering different driving modes depending upon driver preference, and it includes standard settings Eco, Normal and Sport. With available Load-Leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension and Adaptive Variable Suspension, settings expand to include Comfort, Sport S+ and Custom. Using the SPORT or SPORT S+ settings, for example, the i-FORCE MAX powertrain makes use of the electric motor’s instantaneous responsiveness. While the electric motor does the bulk of the work at lower speeds, once above 18 mph, the gasoline engine assumes primary operation for excellent performance in the mid- and high-speed range. When in TOW/HAUL mode, the i-FORCE MAX system is constantly in tandem operation to provide impressive acceleration and torque for towing. The view around this stunning SUV is improved as well due to Sequoia’s plethora of cameras, displaying multiple exterior angles that are viewable from the available 14-inch touchscreen or the available digital display rearview mirror. Those trailering will appreciate Panoramic View Monitor, which displays a top-down view of the SUV and its surrounding area. Options include a rear split view to show what’s nearby on each side of the trailer, and a hitch view to assist with connecting a trailer. For the first time on Sequoia, factory available power folding, extending and retracting tow mirrors can provide added peace. Three Rows, Five Grades Sequoia offers space for families who need it – whether that be to haul passengers, gear or both. It will be available in five unique grades that include SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro and the new Capstone grade. Sequoia’s grade lineup starts with the well-equipped SR5 that offers a strong foundation of power, efficiency and technology. It touts impressive standard features that include the i-FORCE MAX powertrain that is mated to the standard 10-speed automatic transmission, standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, moonroof, heated seats and more. It also features a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument display and Panoramic View Monitor (PVM). When upgrading to the SR5 Premium package, Sequoia adds the 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display, power third row, hands-free liftgate, SofTex-trimmed seats, and cabin and cargo 120-volt power outlets. Also available on SR5 models is the TRD Sport package, which upgrades the standard 18-inch wheels to 20-inch matte black TRD wheels. To complement sporty handling, it adds TRD sport-tuned Bilstein® monotube shocks, TRD-tuned springs, aluminum pedals and a red TRD push-button start. Limited builds upon the SR5 with an emphasis on added convenience. Limited also receives standard second- and third-row manual sunshades to help keep the back half of the SUV sun-free. Available for both SR5 and Limited 4×4 models is the first-for-Sequoia TRD Off-Road package. This package enhances off-road capability with the addition of a selectable locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select that helps controls wheel spin for improved traction, and Downhill Assist Control to aid with steep descents. Crawl Control also comes standard, functioning as an off-road cruise control for low-speed trail navigation in 4WD Low. TRD Off-Road also comes with Multi-Terrain Monitor to provide the driver a better view of hard-to-see spots on the trail. TRD-tuned Bilstein® monotube shock absorbers and TRD-tuned springs are added, and a red front axle driveshaft provides added flair. Inside, aluminum gas/brake pedals are included, and a red TRD push-button start button adds to the performance look and feel. Both SR5 and Limited are outfitted with unique 18-inch alloy wheels unique to the package. Stepping up to the Platinum grade puts an emphasis on added comfort and premium features, thanks to heated and ventilated front and second-row, second-row captain’s chairs, standard 14-speaker JBL® Premium Audio system, standard panoramic moonroof, standard Head-Up Display and more. High-grade LED headlights and taillights are added, along with sequential turn signals. Rain-sensing wipers are added to Platinum, as is standard Qi wireless charging. TRD Pro is a great option for adventure-minded families that plan to get off the beaten path regularly. TRD Pro is not just an off-roader though, as it is loaded with premium features such as standard second-row captain’s chairs, TRD heated steering wheel, and TRD accents on the seats and shift knob. TRD Pro comes with additional cargo hauling options thanks to the TRD roof rack. TRD-tuned FOX internal bypass shocks offer a smooth on-road ride, but most importantly they can confidently handle off-road terrain when the trail gets rough. A 1/4-inch aluminum TRD front skid plate offers added trail protection. Sequoia TRD Pro also offers additional trail capability with a standard selectable locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, CRAWL Control and Downhill Assist Control. TRD Pro proudly sports a heritage-inspired “TOYOTA” grille with an embedded TRD light bar and marker lights toward the top of the grille. It’s equipped with Pro-specific black 18-inch TRD alloy wheels with an increased offset to provide a wider stance. A dual TRD Pro exhaust tip provides added growl and visual appeal. The Capstone grade sits atop the Sequoia lineup, building upon the great features of Platinum while adding additional top-shelf features to make it the most luxurious Sequoia to date. Capstone features unique chrome accents to provide an upscale appearance, with the most eye-catching feature being the standard 22-inch chrome wheels – a first for Sequoia and exclusive to Capstone. The premium cabin experience begins at the first step with standard power running boards that provide access to the standard semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats. Not only are the seats luxury-grade, but they also tout stylish perforation and a Capstone-exclusive black-and-white color combination. The center console and passenger-side dash are accented with authentic American Walnut with an open-pore finish that highlights the wood grain. On the dash, the Walnut pieces surround a Capstone logo that is accentuated with LED mood lighting when the doors are opened. For an even quieter cabin, Capstone is the only Sequoia grade to feature acoustic glass in the front doors for more exterior sound deadening. A wide variety of colors are available on the all-new Sequoia, including White, Wind Chill Pearl, Celestial Silver, Lunar Rock, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Blueprint, Army Green, Midnight Black Metallic, Smoked Mesquite, Supersonic Red and the TRD-exclusive Solar Octane. New Toyota Audio Multimedia Sequoia will be fitted with the new multimedia system first launched in Tundra. It is headlined by large 8-inch or available 14-inch touchscreen that controls the all-new Toyota Audio Multimedia system designed and engineered by Toyota’s Texas-based Connected Technologies team. The Toyota Audio Multimedia system offers an improved user experience thanks to new sight, touch, and voice activation. With Intelligent Assistant available through Drive Connect*, simple phrases like “Hey Toyota” awakens the system for voice-activated commands to search for directions, find POIs, adjust audio controls, change the cabin temperatures and more. The cloud-based native navigation system offered through Drive Connect allows for real-time Over the Air updates for mapping and Points of Interest (POI), and Google POI data is integrated to ensure up-to-date search capability. It also supports standard wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto compatibility. Toyota Audio Multimedia allows for simultaneous dual Bluetooth phone connectivity. A Wi-Fi Connect subscription offers 4G connectivity for up to 5 devices by turning Sequoia into an AT&T Hotspot*, and it also offers the ability to link your separate Apple Music® and Amazon Music subscriptions to your vehicle with Integrated Streaming. Active Safety System: Toyota Safety Sense All Sequoia grades come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. This active safety system includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection that features multiple enhancements over the previous generation, including not only detecting the vehicle ahead but also a pedestrian in low light, bicyclist in daytime, an oncoming vehicle and a pedestrian at intersections when making a turn. At intersections, the system is designed to detect an oncoming vehicle or pedestrian when performing a left-hand turn and provide audio/visual alerts and automatic braking in certain conditions. Emergency steering assist is an additional function designed to detect pedestrians and stabilize the driver’s emergency evasive steering maneuvers and help prevent lane departure. Sequoia will be equipped with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist is designed to notify the driver via audible and visual alerts and slight steering force if it senses the vehicle is leaving the lane without engaging a turn signal. When DRCC is set and engaged, Lane Tracing Assist uses visible lane markers or a preceding vehicle to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane. Automatic High Beams are designed to detect preceding or oncoming vehicles and automatically switch between high beam and low beam headlights. Road Sign Assist is designed to recognize certain road sign information using a forward-facing camera and display them on the multi-information display (MID). Toyota’s Rear Seat Reminder comes standard on all 2023 Sequoias. The feature can note whether a rear door was opened within 10 minutes of the vehicle being turned on, or at any time after the vehicle has been turned on, with a reminder message in the instrument cluster after the engine is turned off, accompanied by multitone chimes. In addition to the TSS 2.5 system, other standard safety features include Blind Spot Monitor which is designed to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes. Rear Cross Traffic Alert can offer added peace of mind by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerting you with a visual and audible warning. The Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking is designed to implement brake control when there’s a possibility of a collision with a stationary object, approaching vehicle, or while parking.

“Hey, Toyota,” you say, taking a moment to ponder what you’d like, “I fancy some coffee.” And, just like that, your 2023 bZ4X electric vehicle obliges, bringing up a list of nearby cafes, their ratings and asking you if you’d like the route to one for your mid-day break. Seems easy, but behind the scenes, there’s a complex web of commands, hand-offs, and processing working its way through your car and the cloud to make sure your wish is the car’s command. Ryan Oehler, product owner at Toyota Connected, an independent software and innovation company, leads the team responsible for Toyota’s new Intelligent Assistant, available in both the Toyota Audio Multimedia and Lexus Interface for the North American market. The new infotainment system is available in 2022 model year vehicles like the Toyota Tundra and Lexus NX. Connected Services trials are included on these vehicles, including Drive Connect, which offers Intelligent Assistant, Cloud Navigation and Destination Assist. more Oehler said with the Intelligent Assistant, which is cloud-based and supplements the onboard Voice Assistant, there has been a steady ramp up to meet both mainstream American customers and tech-savvy “power users” where they’re at with intuitive features for today’s drivers and a slew of more advanced features in the pipeline. It all starts with automatic speech recognition (ASR). When the driver pushes the talk button in the vehicle, it transcribes that speech to text both in the vehicle’s embedded computer and over the cloud. “It’s doing things like looking at the waveforms of the audio, and it’s actually able to understand, phonetically, what that translates to and formulate transcriptions based on that audio input,” Oehler said. The technology is able to recognize commands, parsing through accents, dialects and even different pitches, frequencies and tones to recognize what to do next. Because of the markets where it is currently sold – the U.S., Canada and Mexico – it’s even designed to be able to recognize commands in Spanish and French in addition to English. The transcribed command text is then processed by Toyota Connected’s machine learning models in the cloud – what is the intent of the words being used, from audio commands to windshield wipers or even finding a five-star-rated burger restaurant nearby. From there, it’s fed back to the vehicle where notes are compared between the embedded and cloud voice assistants to ensure the car is most accurately executing the command the user actually wants. “This is where the Toyota Connected magic comes in,” Oehler said. First up, the computer determines top-line intent – temperature, audio, navigation, etc. Then comes sub-intent – specific temperature, a song or that ice cream shop that always seems to hit the spot. If it’s a music request for a new J-Pop song, and you’re already listening to your favorite streaming platform, the head unit will attempt to find the song on that platform. If it’s not there, it will switch to the next best option, such as satellite radio. The system is constantly getting smarter, looking at accuracy and tweaking commands to add more ways to ask for specific functions. The new infotainment technologies that have brought forth the Intelligent Assistant made their way to the Lexus NX, LX, and Toyota Tundra for 2022 but are already being introduced in more models for 2023 in North America. As it proliferates to more models, the speed of the machine learning system’s ability to, well, learn will only accelerate. Of course, if a customer doesn’t want to use the Intelligent Assistant, they can use the embedded Voice Assistant as well for more basic functions. “Certain audiences expect to interact in completely different ways,” Oehler said. “Younger audiences that are more familiar with their modern voice assistants tend to operate in a more fluid manner, whereas people that are less familiar would say, ‘Navigation’ and then ‘Texas’ in a series of steps,” for instance. To help the user, we’ve added more contextual things, such as prompts, to help guide them through this new user experience. One of the other important things that we’re learning is what our customers want to use on a daily basis.” And it does so with the quality experience customers have come to expect from Toyota. More features are planned, as well as bolstering the features already available. Ask the Intelligent Assistant to tell you a joke.
