Changing a vehicle’s oil is simple enough to do at home, but if you simply do not have the time to do it yourself, fear not, your friends here at Passport Auto Group are here to help you out. You may be under the impression that every car needs an oil change at exactly three months or 3,000 miles. Or maybe you're on the other end of the spectrum and you won't bother until your engine actually stops running. (Spoiler alert: if that has happened, it's too late.) The first example is just a little off. The second is scary! MY, HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED. The standard 3,000 mile rule comes from an earlier age of vehicle production. With advances in both engine and oil technology, you don't need to stick to such a frequent schedule. Some classic and specialty cars will still want to be on this tighter timetable, but if you're driving a vehicle built in the last decade or so, it probably isn't necessary. It won't hurt the car, but you might just be wasting some good oil if you change it too often. BUT WHY SHOULD I BOTHER TO CHANGE THE OIL IN MY CAR? Oil lubricates your engine and all of its little components. When the oil breaks down, it can't do its job effectively anymore. With all that friction, your engine will overheat, which can cause parts to quickly wear down and warp. If you just never change your oil, your engine is likely to eventually seize up and turn into a big useless pile of scrap metal. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO? Unfortunately, there isn't really an easy rule to remember across the board. Each car is different, and each driver is different. The first thing to do is check your owner's manual. For example, some manufacturers recommend a maximum interval of 12 months or 7,500 miles between oil changes for many of their models. Your next guideline is to make sure you always pay attention to your vehicle's notifications and warning lights- most new vehicles include some very cool technology and it would be a shame to ignore it! You'll want to adjust your own oil change schedule depending on your driving habits and conditions. Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can cause your oil to work a little harder. On March 28, the all-new 2019 Toyota RAV4 makes its global debut at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. As the original small SUV that created the segment, RAV4 has taken its guests on countless adventures for over two decades, earning the current rank of the best-selling Toyota in the country. For its fifth generation, the all-new RAV4 debuts more powerful, roomier and fuel-efficient than ever before. A Long Island schoolteacher named Irving Gordon has kept his 1966 Volvo in such good shape, that it's driven more than 3 million miles. A lot of care goes into making a car last a long time, and here are a few things to expect as your car ages. These tips show how to keep your car in top shape, if not for millions of miles, then certainly for longer than average. First Service By about 15,000 miles, your new vehicle should be serviced for the first time. A good first service will include inspection of core parts like the brake systems, cooling systems, possibly fuel systems, and include an oil change, air filter replacement, and tire rotation. A first scheduled service shouldn't cost you much more than $200, but could help outline small quirks in your vehicle, which you can address easily and preemptively, before they cost you a lot more in the future. more Second Service At 30,000 miles, it's time for your second scheduled service. This one is a little more thorough, and should cost $500 at the most. It will cover all the parts previously inspected, and include a new fuel filter. Depending on the quality of your transmission fluid and spark plugs, those might get replaced by this point, but if they're high quality, you can wait until later. Third Service As your third 15,000-mile interval comes (45,000 miles), it's usually time to have the same treatment that was done at with your first service. Typically, the only difference is that if the transmission fluid wasn't changed before, it will definitely need it now. You could still wait on the spark plugs, if they're very well made. Fourth Service Just as the third service is about the same as the first, the fourth service, at 60,000 miles, is usually the same as the second, with some important replacements. The shop should replace all the belts, valves, and hoses that are showing age, and the spark plugs will need to be replaced. 100,000-Mile Service After the 15,000-mile cycle has taken you to about 100,000 miles, you'll need to take your vehicle in for the most important checkup of it's lifespan. However, don't be fooled into spending more money than your other services. While 100,000 miles is a big number, it does not pose a particular threat, because with most vehicles, there are few parts that wouldn't need attention sometime before 100,000 miles. Get a checkup, which is similar to the other services, and then maybe go on a trip to celebrate your healthy ride. Remember, every vehicle has its own manufacturer recommended schedule of maintenance, and this only a general outline that may not perfectly represent your vehicle. You might be wondering what's so important about spring cleaning your car? Well, it's not just a stubborn tradition. Here are the best ways to clean your car as the winter ends, and the reasons why. Pre-Winter and Post-Winter Waxing Road salt is a major risk to vehicles during and after the winter season. One good way to protect against the damaging minerals is by giving the paint job a fresh wax, at the start of winter starts and the beginning of spring. Other areas of your car can also suffer such as the wheels so remember to clean and protect them as well. more Washing Away Road Salt Residue The residual road salt on your car can wreak havoc on it's exterior, and even cause dangerous corrosion on the undercarriage. A thorough washing is all it takes to remove these minerals and protect your vehicle. In some extreme cases, drivers who left salt residue on their undercarriage ended up with holes in their floor. Don't shrug it off, because rinsing off the remaining salt that's dried onto your car will save you a lot of stress. Just going to a paid car wash is good enough, if you can get the undercarriage rinsed. However, if you wash it yourself, be sure to add a few tablespoons of baking soda to the wash bucket, which will neutralize the salt. The Perfect Wash and Rinse Residual salt is imperceptibly small, so you'll want to make sure that areas inside the wheels, around fenders, the trunk, hood, and movable parts such as door jambs are washed. If these areas are not thoroughly cleaned, you could very well see problems later. When you wash your car, be sure to use a quality soap; ideally, one that it intended for automobiles. In particular, avoid dish soaps. Some of these soaps can wear away the clear coat of your car.
