Additionally, the majority will buy accessories within the first 90 days of purchasing their vehicle and most would prefer to buy accessories at the dealership—yet fewer than five percent do, due to lack of availability. Edwin Sanchez has lived a life of service: first as a 19-year-old artilleryman during Operation Desert Storm, in which he engaged the Iraqi Republican Guard; then as a rookie firefighter called to action on September 11, 2001, filling in for fallen comrades during a 48-hour emergency shift; and later as first responder in disaster-struck places like Puerto Rico and the Hurricane Sandy-battered shores of New York. But his proudest moment came in Haiti, following the 2010 earthquake that took about 100,000 lives. The death toll might have been higher were it not for Sanchez, stationed in Port-au-Prince as a first responder and search specialist with FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force from New York. As the sun set one evening, Sanchez approached a collapsed building, under which two siblings, 8 and 10, had been trapped for six days. Sanchez and his team spent five moonlit hours boring through steel and concrete, and scooping out dirt with their hands. When the children were finally hoisted to safety, the moment of jubilation was captured in an iconic photo that ran on the cover of the New York Post. more On Saturday, March 31, Toyota and the New York International Auto Show joined forces to celebrate Sanchez by presenting him with a 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. During the opening ceremony at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, Theresa L. Egan, executive deputy commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, handed the Army reservist his new keys. Egan passed along a special message from Governor Andrew Cuomo, who remarked, “Thanks to Toyota America’s generosity, we have a chance to say thank you to Sgt. Sanchez for your bravery and your commitment to our nation and to our state by presenting you and your family with a brand-new Toyota RAV4.” “Toyota strongly supports the Armed Forces and is incredibly grateful for our troops, veterans and reservists,” said Jeff Buchanan, general manager for Toyota’s New York sales region. “For three decades, Eddie Sanchez has devoted himself to serving and protecting others, and Toyota is proud to honor his heroism.” The donation was made with the help of the Toyota Veterans Association, which provides advocacy and support for Toyota veterans and active military servicemen and women by educating Toyota associates on the many important contributions and sacrifices made by veterans. Sanchez, 48, is now an E7 first class sergeant with the Army Reserve’s 404th Civil Affairs (Airborne) out of Fort Dix, New Jersey, and a firefighter for FDNY Rescue 4, covering Queens. His rescue is responsible for uniquely dangerous jobs: firefighters trapped in buildings, collapsed cranes, and people trapped under trains, for example. Sanchez was joined at the ceremony by his family and colleagues from his firehouse. The lifelong Queens resident says the RAV4 Hybrid will replace his current car, which has 200,000 miles on it. In addition to using the RAV4 Hybrid for his long trips to Fort Dix, Sanchez will rely on it for several lacrosse tournaments across the region to support his 16-year-old son, Christian James (named after two firefighters who died on 9/11), who hopes to land a Division 1 lacrosse scholarship. Sanchez also has an 11-year-old son. “Eddie embodies the spirit of service and selflessness of America’s veterans,” said Eric Eversole, a vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and president of Hiring Our Heroes, with whom Toyota partners to help veterans, transition service members and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities. “In recognizing Eddie, Toyota continues to support veterans and military families like the Sanchez family in an effort to bring together military and civilian communities across the United States.” The 2018 RAV4 Hybrid continues to build upon the model’s 22-year reputation for comfort, style and performance while offering a bevy of standard-issue safety technologies. NASCAR kicked off the first-of-three race weekends in the annual NASCAR Goes West campaign, comprised of Las Vegas, Phoenix and Fontana, California where Toyota drivers picked up one victory and a pair of runner-up results at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend. MENCS Toyota drivers collected two top-five finishes at Las Vegas in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) race on Sunday with Kyle Busch (second) and Martin Truex Jr. (fourth), but neither could out duel eventual race winner Kevin Harvick. more Busch’s second-place finish moved him up six spots in the driver point standings to fifth, just one spot behind fellow Camry driver Truex who is in fourth after the first three races of the year. “The M&M’s Caramel Camry was good and Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and the guys did a great job this weekend,” Busch said, after the race. “We came here and prepared well. They did a good job through practice getting us a great race car. There was no catching that 4 (Kevin Harvick) – he was on rails today and lights out. I don’t know what we need to do to catch up and get better like those guys, but certainly we have some work to do especially here at Vegas and some other places we go to maybe we’ll get closer. It was a great day for us and we’ll go to Phoenix.” Later this year, NASCAR returns to Las Vegas to kick off the Playoffs, marking the first time the track will host two Cup weekends in the same season. For Busch, there’s gains to be made for the fall race. “Definitely take some notes,” he said. “This was a great run for us. Really fine tuning and figuring out what the race track needs in order to get better.” Toyota NHRA driver Antron Brown – who often exceeds 330 mph in his Top Fuel dragster – served as pace car driver for Sunday’s MENCS race, leading the field to the green in a Toyota Camry. NXS Camry driver Christopher Bell kicked off the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) event in Las Vegas by capturing his second-consecutive pole position. The Oklahoma native also earned his second-straight top-five result of the season when he finished second on Saturday. He battled eventual race winner Kyle Larson in the closing laps. Both drivers have roots in midget car racing and Bell has won the last three most prestigious events that the duo has competed in – the 2017 and 2018 Chili Bowl and 2017 Turkey Night. Just one race before, Bell earned a third-place result in Atlanta and followed it up in Vegas with a second-place effort. “Let’s hope that means something for Phoenix,” Bell said while discussing the possibility of his current succession of finishes. “I had a really, really good Rheem Camry today and it was a lot of fun to race.” Brandon Jones (seventh) also earned his second top-10 finish in a Camry this season. NCWTS Once again, Busch attempted the triple when he competed in all three NASCAR national series races in his hometown of Las Vegas. Though he came up short of winning all three races, he was victorious in Friday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race, lengthening his list of racing accomplishments. Not only did Busch become the first driver to win all three NASCAR national series races at Las Vegas, he has now won at all active NCTWS tracks and he earned his 50th career series triumph, just one shy of the series all-time wins record of 51. “We’ve raced and won all across the country, but I’ve just never been able to get back to Las Vegas to run a race,” Busch said whose only other NCWTS start at Las Vegas was in 1999. “This one’s pretty cool to be able to win in the hometown and finish my list of Truck Series facilities that I’ve raced at and I’ve won at.”

Camry driver Hamlin continued his restrictor plate success over the weekend as he earned his third top-four finish in the Daytona 500 in his last four starts in the race. He led 22 laps (of 207) in the 500-mile Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) race after his Camry started on the front row for The Great American race. Hamlin has not finished outside the top 25 at the superspeedway since 2013. “Definitely disappointed after leading on the last restart, but it’s just a 50-50 shot,” said Hamlin, following the race. “It’s about what line can stay organized and work the best. I had the 37 (Chris Buescher) committed to my rear bumper which was great, but we couldn’t get the 21 (Paul Menard) to buy in. We just didn’t have the line to winI’m proud of our whole FedEx Camry team for giving me a car that we were able to battle back and lead a lap there and give ourselves a chance.” more Defending MENCS champion Martin Truex Jr. found speed in his Camry mid-race in the Daytona 500 – leading four laps. He would ultimately finish 18th after battling the last few laps to stay with the pack upfront. “It was our day for a while and then it wasn’t,” stated the defending champion. “It’s just the way it goes. Superspeedway racing – a lot of it is out of your control. That last caution in hindsight, we probably should have gotten tires. Tried to come up from the back because we were sitting ducks upfront. We didn’t have enough speed to keep up with some of those guys up front. I’d get back there but didn’t have the speed to get by them. It was just one of those deals where we needed it to stay green to be in a good spot. It just didn’t work out in the end.” In only his second-career Daytona 500 start, Camry driver Erik Jones was out to a hot start. The 21-year-old led 11 laps early before getting caught up in a multi-car incident on Lap 61 that also collected fellow Toyota driver Daniel Suárez, who was running in the top five at the time. “It looked like the 17 (Ricky Stenhouse Jr.) just got freed up there by the 12 (Ryan Blaney), unfortunately,” said Jones. “We tried to check up and everybody got stacked up, and caused a big wreck. It’s unfortunate because the DEWALT Camry was definitely fast – we just didn’t get to the end to see what we could really do. We were in position I thought to have a good race. We were staying upfront and out of trouble, it just didn’t work out.” NXS In Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) race at Daytona, Suárez was the highest finishing Camry driver in eighth. In his debut with Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing, Brandon Jones scored a top-10 finish after early damage to his No. 19 Camry put him towards the back of the field. The 10th-place finish was the 18th top 10 of his career in the NXS and first with Toyota and JGR. Jones was jubilant after his first race with Toyota. “I’ve never had a race like this before at Daytona – this was a pretty crazy race,” said the driver of the No. 19 Camry. “Heck of a race with our guys for the first time. I thought we were going to end up in the back there and not have a great day, but we ended up with a top-10 and that says a lot about this organization and a lot about what Toyota does for us. It was pretty incredible to pull off a top-10 off after looking at this car here today.” NCWTS In his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) debut with Toyota and Kyle Busch Motorsports, Spencer Davis wheeled his Tundra to a seventh-place result at Daytona Friday night. Davis was not only proud of where he and the No. 51 Tundra team finished, but felt accomplishment for showing patience in his first NASCAR national series race. “The big word coming into this weekend was patience and it showed,” said Davis. “We rode around on the bottom and stayed out of trouble – stayed out of the big ones and just tried to make it to the end.” NCWTS pole sitter David Gilliland received contact to his Tundra late in the race and ultimately finished 21st, while Noah Gragson and Brett Moffitt finished 23rd and 26th, respectively. What’s Next: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is back in action Sunday, Feb. 25 at Atlanta Motor Speedway at 2 p.m. ET on FOX. On Saturday, Feb. 24, the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will race a doubleheader Atlanta Motor Speedway with the NXS race at 2 p.m. ET and the NCWTS event at 4:30 p.m. ET – both on FS1.
