Engines

The standard engine in the 2018 RAV4 is a 2.5-liter I-4 with 176 horsepower. The Equinox base engine is a 1.5-liter turbo-4 putting out 170 horsepower, and Chevy is promising more engines later this year. RAV4 also offers an AWD hybrid powerplant with a 2.5-liter I-4 engine and two electric motors for a combined output of 194 horsepower, 206 lb-ft of torque and fuel economy of 34 city/30 highway mpg. Equinox does not offer a hybrid model.

Safety Features

The 2018 RAV4 receives the Toyota Safety Sense-P package as standard equipment on all trim levels. The package includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Pedestrian Detection, Collision-Mitigation Braking and Auto High Beams. Equinox also offers some of these features, but only as an option package on its highest trim level. RAV4 also offers front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic detection, as well as an available Bird?s-Eye monitor with a 360-degree view.

Dimensions

The Chevy Equinox was downsized for 2018. The 2018 RAV4 is longer, taller, lighter and has a larger fuel capacity. The RAV4 interior features more rear headroom (+0.4 inches), front legroom (+1.7 inches), and front shoulder room (+0.1 inches). In addition, the RAV4 provides 73.4 cubic feet of cargo space, compared to 63.5 for the Equinox. RAV4 has a tighter turning circle, 34.8 vs 37.4 feet.
