Located less than an hour east of bustling Washington D.C., Annapolis, Maryland, is an ideal road trip destination for anyone wanting to breathe in the refreshing air of the Chesapeake Bay. If you’re looking for an excuse for a day trip this fall, consider the following reasons why you should visit Annapolis.

1. The City has Rich History

The capital of Maryland was founded in 1649, so its historical roots run deep. Annapolis features the oldest state capital building in the country, which was built in 1772, and the city also served briefly as the U.S. capitol in 1783. The historic Maryland State House is open to the public seven days a week, allowing visitors to take advantage of the free walking tours. You can see several other historic buildings throughout the city, including the Old Treasury building. History buffs will also appreciate the many museums and sites Annapolis has to offer, such as the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

2. You Can’t Beat the Steamed Crab

Like most waterfront destinations along the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is home to world-class restaurants that offer some of the best seafood around. The city boasts the largest crab feast in the world
