The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will allow true EV operation and performance for up to 15 miles at speeds up to 62 mph, along with quick home charging using a standard AC outlet and 15-amp dedicated circuit. Operating in EV mode, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid provides the quick, smooth quiet driving of a pure electric vehicle. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid offers the same five-passenger seating and luggage space as the standard Prius model.
The 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid retains the Hybrid Synergy Drive of the standard Prius model and will seamlessly switch into hybrid operation at a pre-determined state of battery charge. A newly developed 4.4 kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack replaces the standard Prius model's nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery and fits under the rear cargo floor, and the vehicle adds an easy-to-use external charging cable.
A full charge using an external AC outlet takes approximately 2.5 to 3.0 hours using a 120v household outlet or 1.5 hours using a 240v outlet. The included 120v charging cable connects to the charging port inlet located on the right-rear fender.
What are the key advantages of the Prius Plug-in?The Plug-in features an extended EV mode that can let you drive up to 15 miles on a single charge, up to 62 mph, as well as a quick three-hour charge time from a standard 120V AC household outlet. If you run out of electric charge, the vehicle seamlessly shifts into hybrid mode, still giving you great mpg.
How does the Prius Plug-in work?
To charge the Prius Plug-in, you simply plug it into any standard household outlet with a dedicated 15-amp circuit. This produces a full charge in just three hours. If you have installed a dedicated 220V Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) outlet, charging the vehicle only takes 1.5 hours. If you run out of electric charge while driving, don't worry - the vehicle automatically transitions to hybrid mode and runs on the gas engine until you have a chance to recharge.
Should I buy a Prius or the Prius Plug-in?
The Prius Plug-in operates just like the 3rd Generation Prius, but it gives you the added benefit of an extended all-electric range. This is a great option for drivers who take many short trips and have access to outlets for charging. For instance, it's possible to nearly always run in electric mode and never use a single drop of gas. However, if you find yourself regularly taking longer trips and/or have limited access to outlets, then the 3rd Generation Prius may be a better choice.
How does the Plug-in charge?
The Plug-in will charge from a conventional 120V outlet in about three hours. To ensure the vehicle charges correctly, your 120V outlet should be on a dedicated 15-amp (or more) circuit. It can also be charged using 240V devices equipped with SAE J1772 connectors. A complete charge takes about 1.5 hours on 240V power. For any questions, contact our approved provider, Leviton, at (855) 5-PLUGIN, or www.leviton.com/toyota and ask for an in-home assessment.
Do I need to plug it in to use it?
No, but it is generally advantageous to plug it in. Depending on your electricity rate, you could save money by plugging the vehicle in. Maximum fuel savings will occur the more often the vehicle is charged fully (at home and at work, for example).
